A vision for Harrisburg housing

George Fernandez, founder and CEO of Latino Connection and developer with the Fernandez Realty Group, has a vision for Dauphin County, Pennsylvania that is bigger than any one building, city or person.“I feel like I have traumas from being a kid that I haven’t addressed, and one of those traumas was low-income housing,” Fernandez said. “I wanted to make more access and bigger opportunities, and overall I wanted to build something that would help to change the face of what low income housing looks like.”In July 2022, the NYT reported that Harrisburg is the second most competitive retail market in the country, signaled by the fact that demand for low-income housing is three times greater than the number of available affordable rental homes in Dauphin County. Fernandez aims to make a difference in this community, where he was raised.

The first development on tap for Fernandez Realty Group aims to also be the first to meet the standards of a new affordable housing city program for Dauphin County. Sycamore Homes, a four-story, 23-unit housing development on the 1400 block of Sycamore Street in Harrisburg, will prioritize renters that participate in assistance programs.

The project includes studio apartments, and Fernandez also wants to ensure that all his developments have community rooms to host tech training, job training and health care screenings.
