Expressing PayPal’s Culture in a Vibrant Place that is Authentically Toronto
Established in 1998, PayPal made the rapid rise to become the premier digital payment platform in North America. Its exponential growth continued, creating the need for it to spin-off from eBay in 2014. This independence necessitated the firm’s re-definition and re-establishment of its brand identity, as well as the creation of new flagship offices that reflect its mission to democratize financial services across the world.
The PayPal team identified their cultural values of contextual relevance, innovation, collaboration, wellness and inclusion as key criteria to be met in the design of their new headquarters building. The challenge however, was that these values needed to be reflected in an already existing building, as they were going to retrofit the interior of an existing shell. Warehaus’ team of designers successfully helped the client select an apt location – MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, CA. The result was an energetic, culturally appropriate and contextually relevant new working environment that has helped the Canadian office to define and reinforce its identity.
To create a secure, vibrant and supportive working environment, the design team created neighborhoods in the 7,800 sf workspace that were finished in traditional, warm materials such as wood, and accented by contemporary bright colors of murals and graffiti by local artists. Located along the perimeter so that all workspaces are daylit and have views, these neighborhoods are punctuated by sociopetal spaces which support knowledge sharing and encourage collaboration. Different work type spaces – open, semi-private and private booths – were provided to acknowledge diversity in workstyles, incorporating PayPal’s unique work culture into its physical space.
