Putting on a show at the Appell Center's enhanced concession area

Nestled in downtown York, PA, the Appell Center stands as a hallmark of architectural grandeur, playing host to two historic theaters – The Capitol Theatre (1906) and the Strand Theatre (1925). The iconic landmark is set to undergo a transformation to its concessions area, continuing a design partnership with Warehaus that began in 2019. Driven by the need to enhance theater flow and patron experience, the Appell Center re-engaged Warehaus in 2022 to lead the design and construction phases for its three concessions areas. The project’s unique challenge is to modernize these beloved spaces while preserving their rich heritage.

Warehaus acknowledges the significance of preserving the Appell Center’s historical legacy while creating spaces that resonate with contemporary audiences. Beyond revitalizing concessions spaces, the project has encompassed a comprehensive approach to meet the needs of the modern theatergoer. The integration of updated design and optimized food service facilities aims to seamlessly blend aesthetics with functionality.

The project’s program centers on revitalizing the three interior concession stands. However, the scope expanded to address additional areas of the building based on requirements for Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funding. Warehaus offered comprehensive support in navigating the RACP funding landscape, ensuring the inclusion of essential roofing replacements and providing bid assistance. The project scope also encompassed the design of fourteen exterior door replacements, with MEP upgrades facilitated by Gatter & Diehl and food service design handled by Clark Food Services. As the project continued to take shape, Warehaus remained steadfast in its commitment to seamlessly harmonize historical significance with contemporary functionality, further solidifying the Appell Center’s role as a cultural cornerstone.
