York County's history starts here

The York County History Center embarked on a transformative journey to celebrate the diverse historic experiences of York County, aiming to inspire future generations. The new museum project began with a multiyear consolidation, transitioning 10 scattered buildings to a single historical campus on the corner of North Pershing Avenue and Philadelphia Street and along the Codorus Creek in downtown York City.

Two-story glass lobby connecting the steam plant to the adjacent building

We listen.

The former MetEd building was purchased in December 2015 with plans to convert the old steam plant into the historical hub of York County. The property, a significant historic building in York City dating back to 1885, is now a 50,000 sf modern museum connecting the steam plant to an adjacent building via a two-story lobby made mostly of glass. The team meticulously expanded and repurposed the historic industrial site, blending contemporary elements with its rich heritage. The new history center includes a 15,000 sf main exhibit gallery, a 2,000 sf gallery for changing exhibits and a lobby that provides 3,000 to 4,000 sf for event space. The main exhibit gallery takes up most of the first floor of the steam plant, but portions of the gallery extend two stories high.

We design.

The museum’s exhibits integrate large iconic artifacts, immersive environmental graphics, and interactive media. Themed around the notions of “BUILDING, GROWING, and MAKING,” the exhibits guide visitors through the county’s evolution, from its past accomplishments to its ongoing endeavors in renewal and innovation. The museum’s collection showcases an impressive array of macro-artifacts, ranging from a Conestoga wagon to a 72-ton ammonia compressor, each telling a unique story of York County’s residents and their contributions to history. Behind the changing exhibit in the adjacent building is space for a multi-purpose café and warming kitchen to support events in the space. The second floor of the new center houses the library and archives, administrative offices and more exhibit space. A rooftop deck above the lobby and adjacent building provides additional event space and scenic views of downtown York City and the Codorus Creek. The third-floor space where giant bins once held coal for the power plant is converted into a community gallery with several thousand square feet of space for special collections.
