Adaptive reuse of turn-of-the-century factory unites college engineering program

When York College of Pennsylvania, a privately funded school with over 4,500 full-time students, decided to unify its engineering departments in one facility, they acquired the York Narrow Fabrics building. The site of the turn-of-the-century factory bridged two previously disconnected areas of the College – the Main and West campuses. The transformed Engineering Center now houses the college’s mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering programs.

Adaptive reuse of turn-of-the-century factory at York College

We listen.

Warehaus and York College have formed a strong partnership through a shared understanding of the college’s long-term goals.

We design.

Warehaus designers capitalized on the 24-foot-high clerestory building spine, creating light wells to allow natural light into the main corridor, and into the laboratories and classrooms on either side. A 9,000 sf addition to the existing building provides shop and fabrication space. The flexible open-plan design fosters collaboration between students and local industries partnering on product development projects.

Adaptive reuse project brings new life to historic building at York College

We deliver.

York College and Warehaus saw the adaptive reuse of the former factory as a natural fit for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy Efficient Design certification. Environmental responsibility and life cycle energy savings informed the design process, and the project was awarded LEED Silver certification.
