Volvo North America Office Transformation

Shippensburg, PA

A Flexible, Future-Driven Workplace for Volvo North America

Volvo North America transformed its traditional office space at its Shippensburg, Pennsylvania facility to better support evolving work dynamics. As remote work shifted many individual tasks outside the office, the company reimagined its workplace as a hub for collaboration and team-oriented activity. Spanning 84,723 sf, the facility emphasizes flexible, activity-based settings over individual offices and now serves as a model for future Volvo offices across Europe and the United States, aligned with the company’s industrial identity and brand colors.

We listen.

Warehaus led the design and execution of this transformation, creating a workplace that incorporates agile furniture solutions tailored to a variety of work styles. The new office includes dedicated collaboration zones, privacy-focused call booths, and efficient meeting spaces, all reflecting Volvo’s industrial aesthetic. Flexible event spaces make the facility adaptable for large meetings, customer visits, and community engagement, while thoughtful wayfinding, industrial-themed décor, and curated art installations enrich the user experience.

We design.

The renovation embraces Volvo’s “Living Office” concept, prioritizing collaboration, innovation, and employee well-being. The main entrance lobby is animated by a striking ceiling of wood-look planks interwoven with linear lighting, introducing depth, rhythm, and transparency. A layered reception desk of angled materials guides visitors toward secure access points, softened by planting and integrated seating to create a warm welcome. Beyond, a two-story geometric wood accent wall connects the first and second floors, illuminated naturally by skylights and dramatically at night with wall-grazing light. Together, these elements establish a dynamic arrival experience that balances functionality, security, and hospitality.

We deliver.

Break areas, expanded fitness facilities, dedicated mother’s rooms, and provisions for future medical services further support a holistic workplace experience. Safety also guided the design, with careful attention to circulation patterns, clear lines of sight, and the strategic selection and placement of materials to support Volvo’s corporate Active Shooter Response Plan. By integrating these measures seamlessly into the environment, the design achieves a balance between open collaboration and secure workplace practices. The completed transformation positions Volvo’s Shippensburg facility as a forward-looking environment that unites innovation, adaptability, and a deep commitment to employee well-being and safety.
